Maine has a long and interesting skiing history.  Most of the lost areas in Maine were small, mom and pop operations that helped introduce countless thousands to the sport.  If you would like to learn more about this history, I heartily recommend Glenn Parkinson's book, First Tracks.  You can order this book on at this link.
